Sarah Whitehead is probably one of the most qualified Dog (and cat) Behaviourists in Europe; and the UK’s most respected Behaviourist. With an MSc in Animal Behaviour, she is also a Certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist (you won’t find many of them around). She is also a full Member of the APBC, the APDT, the CCAB, the ABTC, and the OMG-That’s Too Many.
So Sarah is smart, we can guess that; but she is also friendly, fun and very approachable. I know that because I am proud to say, we have met a few times.
Sarah wrote a few books, however my favourite one is Clever Dog. Clever Dog is the compilation of some of the Behavioural Cases Sarah’s dealt with over her 25 years of experience.
There are a few things I like about this book; firstly, it’s very accessible to everyone (very little Dog Training and Behavioural jargon). Secondly, if like me, you love dogs, and are curious, this book is a real page-turner. Finally, just like Sarah herself, Clever Dog is smart and fun; and it leaves you wanting to spend even more time with your dog.
Dr Ian Dunbar says about Sarah’s book: “This is the one myth-busting book that your dog is dying for you to read.”
When looking at your own dog it's very easy to anthropomorphise (attributing human feelings to your dog) as we are of course emotionally involved with them, therefore it's sometimes hard to remain objective. That's what makes Clever Dog such a brilliant book: we look at other dogs, other people’s dogs, and case studies we can look at objectively. Through them, and thanks to Sarah's expertise, we learn what can sometimes start bad habits, and unwanted behaviour, and how to open new lines of communication with our dogs.
Sarah makes dog psychology simpler to understand and approachable to all. Clever Sarah!!
If you are already a client or friend of mine, this book is probably already on your reading list, and if not, hurry up and get your hands on this essential read for dog owners and dogs lovers alike.
